I'd like to know which size to buy. Is it possible to get too large a pressure cooker? We are 4 large eaters and I am considering a 5 or 7 liter. I would like to use it for large soups and stews, but still be able to use it for smaller side dishes.

It sounds to me like you will be using the cooker most often for large one-dish meals. Although you will still be able to make small amounts of a side dish in the 7-liter, it will just take a few more minutes to develop steam and let it out. Trying to get a one-size-fits-all in anything usually disappoints. I remember trying a hybrid bike for use on mountain trails and road riding. I ended up being dissatisfied with the performance in both areas. My suggestion is that you purchase the 7-liter and you will love it so much that you will probably want a 4-liter or smaller one for those side dishes. Kuhn Rikon makes the largest variety of pressure cookers in the world.
